Care and Cleaning

Cleaning and Caring for Your Jewelry

Proper cleaning and care can go a long way to protecting your jewelry so you can enjoy it for a long time.

  • Professional Inspection – Bring your jewelry in to Duncan & Boyd Jewelers so one of our professionals can clean and inspect it.  We recommend that you do this at least annually so that we can help you look for loose settings, faulty links, worn prongs, etc.
  • Cleaning – Clean your jewelry at home frequently to avoid dirt buildup, which may hasten wear.

  • A prong that is loose, worn, or catches on fabric may lead to a lost diamond.  If you suspect a problem, have Duncan & Boyd Jewelers check the item immediately.
  • When not wearing your jewelry, place each item in a separate soft compartment or container.  If cluttered together, jewelry can become scratched.
  • Avoid heavy blows to your diamond. Even though diamonds are among the hardest of all materials, they can chip if struck at the right angle. Don’t risk a damaged engagement ring!
  • Be sure to get jewelry insurance to assure that you can replace it if you experience jewelry theft, loss or jewelry damage beyond normal wear and tear.  Contact Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, for example.
